These cancellations show the exact time a letter officially entered the postal system and left its office of origin. They were used mainly in large offices, which had separate sections for outgoing, arriving and distribution mail. Paris used several types of “depart” handstamps—roman, bâton and mixte—in different sizes and fonts, sometimes also indicating special collections or exceptional dispatches.
